OUR WEEKIt may have been short, but we had a great week this week! We read a great story about the Bremen Town Musicians, started writing our own opinion piece of our choice, and learned how to regroup in the ones place when adding! We also talked about Veteran's Day and why we had that day off of school. ReadingThis week we read and SANG ALONG to the story, The Bremen Town Musicians. This story was written as a play and we really enjoyed reading along with it while we listened. HomophonesWe also learned about HOMOPHONES and did a really great job of listing all the words we could think of that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings! We also listened to a great story called Dear Deer and listened to a fun Homophone Rap on Go Noodle! FundationsIn Fundations this week, we learned all about comparing words and using the suffixes -er and -est. We also learned that the suffix -er can be used to show what a person does for example a singer sings. WritingWe got to look at a really great list of Opinion Piece choices this week! We chose one on Monday and on Friday we started organizing our thoughts so that we can write our piece next week! MathLast week we learned how to add three digit numbers without regrouping. This week we used both Base 10 Form and Expanded Form to add with regrouping in the ones place! It was a little tough at first, but by the end of the week, we are really getting it! Our Week!We had another great week this week! We definitely learned A LOT! We worked on reading skills and inflected endings, learned about scarcity, and learned how to add with new strategies! ReadingWe learned about needs and wants this week and how sometimes scarcity can happen! We read a really neat story about it and then even were able to relate to this issue when we remembered what it was like for the stores to be out of toilet paper! Fundations
WritingWe have been working really hard to write Opinion Pieces. This week we wrote about whether we prefer reading or math and then listed some reasons why we had the opinions that we do. We started out by listing Pros and Cons about each subject and used that information to form a draft! MathWe are learning how to use Base 10 Blocks and Expanded Form to solve addition problems. We are starting out by adding 3 digit numbers without regrouping in any of the places. Our Week!We had such a fun week this week! With Halloween being this weekend, we also enjoyed doing some SPOOKY activities and dressing up at school! ReadingThis week in Reading Street, we learned all about how to help each other in dangerous situations. We talked a lot about how to do this and then read a story about two dogs that help their owner in a dangerous situation called Tara and Tiree, Fearless Friends. FundationsWe learned some great new glues sounds this week and also learned that these sounds are the "Closed Syllable Exceptions." We built and wrote words with -ild, -ind, -old, -olt, and the -ost sounds. MathWe have started learning about addition! This week, we practiced using our facts to make 10 to help us add smaller numbers and "make a 10." We used unifix cubes to model this skill with ten frames and did a lot of practicing! Our Spooky Skeleton Hands!HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!Our Week!Even though it was a short one, we still had a really fun week! We learned more about numbers and how to compare them, different kinds of sentences, completing our opinion piece, and even got to become Geologists! ReadingWe learned all about declarative (statements) and interrogative (questions) type sentences. Next week we will learn about imperative and exclamative sentences. WritingWe completed our Opinion Pieces about Fall this week! We wrote 5 whole paragraphs for this piece by stating our opinions and then giving 3 reasons with details! To celebrate finishing the piece we read the book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert and then created our own leaf creations to illustrate our pieces. MathNow that we have learned how to build numbers in different ways, we are able to compare them! This week we learned the greater than and less than symbols, practiced comparing numbers, watched a couple helpful videos, and then played some fun games! We also learned a very neat game called Digit Place!
Digit PlaceScienceWe were so excited to start our Earth Science Unit this week! We will be exploring rocks and learning all about these earth materials! Today we explored and investigated three different kinds of rocks to see what happened when they were rubbed together. First we observed and described our rocks by looking at them closely with a hand lens. We collected data and sorted our rocks in different ways. Then we rubbed our different rocks together to see what happens. We rubbed them over black and white paper and then noticed that we started to break the rocks into tiny pieces. We made sand! Our Week!We had another fantastic week! We learned so much about numbers, how to write an opinion piece, and about subjects and predicates! We also all looked very nice for picture day on Tuesday! ReadingIn reading this week, we learned about identifying characters and settings of stories. We read the story Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night. We also reviews subjects in sentences and learned about the predicate of a sentence. A subject is what the sentence is about and the predicate is what the subject is doing! We watched a really fun video about Mr. Morton and all the things he does. WritingThis year, we will learn about and write three different types of writing pieces. This week we learned all about writing an opinion piece. Our theme is the season Fall. We started out by reading some facts about fall and deciding if these were things we like about the Fall season or dislike about the Fall season. We used this to determine our opinions about Fall! After making our opinions, we used our fact sheet to start our writing piece. We chose 3 things that we like or dislike about Fall and then listed the reasons we liked or disliked them. FundationsIn Fundations this week, we learned all about the secrets of knowing when to use C, K, and CK when we spell words. We also learned about closed syllables and how to identify if a word is a closed syllable or not! MathDid you know that we can write numbers in 4 different ways? We learned how to write in standard form, Base 10 form, expanded form, and word form this week!
We played a fun game of "Roll and Show" to practice writing 3 digit numbers in these four different ways. Then we made a fun Place Value Robot! We learned 2 different really fun games this week too! We learned how to play "Roll and Count" and "Race to 100!"
We also listened to and sang a really fun song about Place Value!! Our Week This Week!We had another great week in Second Grade! We are already learning so much! ReadingOur Reading Street story this week and has been all about SPACE! We are all definitely fascinated with outer space and really enjoyed learning about astronauts and space this week. We talked about Main Idea in Expository Texts and how to find supporting details. We also talked about subjects in sentences and learned that a complete sentence always has a subject. The subject in a sentence is a noun. We worked hard to identify subjects in different sentences. Astronauts Blasting Off!!WritingThis week in writing, we did a piece about our hoped and dreams for second grade. We each went through the entire writing process and brainstormed about things that we hope to learn or do in second grade. We organized our writing with a flow map, and then wrote a final draft on Friday. Our final drafts came out beautifully! They worked so hard to complete these pieces! FundationsWe started our phonics program this week! This year we will be using Fundations to review very important phonics skills. This week, we learned about digraphs and blends. We used out tiles to build words and mark them up! We also have some spelling words to work on from our Fundations. We use these words for Word Work every day when we begin our literacy stations. MathWe have been working so hard in math this week!! We learned all about the 100s Chart and learned how to use it for one more, one less, and ten more, ten less. We also enjoyed filling in some missing numbers and completed some mystery pictures! We were also introduced to Base 10 Blocks using 100s! We really loved having some extra time to build and play with them as toys before we turn them into tools that we use during math lessons! These tools will guide us in building numbers and undertanding place value! TICKET SPENDINGWe finally got to cash in our tickets today!! We got all kinds of great stuff! Our Week!We had a wonderful first FULL week of school! We learned more of our daily routines, read some great stories, learned new math concepts, studied scientists and science safety, and even harvested our garden!! Reading StreetWe started our first Reading Street Unit this week! We learned about exploring new places, some new vocabulary words called Amazing Words, and practiced reading some high frequency words! The story this week was called "The Twin Club." We also practiced our short vowel sounds by watching a fun video and then playing Roll and Read! We took turns exploring our Classroom Library and then practiced silent reading for 10 whole minutes! WritingFor writing this week, we wrote all about what makes each of us important! We read The Important Book and then wrote a similar poem about ourselves. MathThis week in Math, we practiced ordinal numbers and positional words! We played a fun game together, called "Find It First!" We also had a great time watching the "Left and Right Robot" on Youtube. ScienceWe started our Science Unit this week by learning what a scientist can do and how they explore and investigate! We did a really fun Mystery Science investigation to explore and wonder about our own hands! Backyard Growers!We had a wonderful time harvesting carrots and beans in our garden this week!! WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!!!I am so happy to have happy, smiling children back in this classroom! For a while, we weren't sure if this would be possible, but here we are! We are all so thankful for bring all together, even if we are masked and keeping distance between each other!! Our First Week of SchoolWe had so much fun getting back into our school routine this week! We did so many fun activities and really learned a lot about our school, classroom, and each other! Our First Journal EntryEach morning when we come into the classroom, we make an entry into our journals. How Full Is Your Bucket?We started our day by discussing how to treat each other in the classroom. We read the book How Full Is Your Bucket? to learn how it makes people feel when they get treated poorly and how they feel when they are treated well! To represent the feelings that happen during the story, we used a sheet of paper to crinkle each time a drop was taken from the bucket and then smoothed it out each time a drop was put back into the bucket! First Mask / Snack Break!It was really fun to finally get a peek at these sweet faces hiding under the masks! Self PortraitsWe made beautiful self portraits of ourselves to use for homework to post to our Seesaw journal! What does a Second Grader need to be SUCCESSFUL?We read the book Brand-new Pencils, Brand-new Books and talked about what we all need In order to be successful second graders this year! They all came up with such great ideas! After we made a whole class circle map, we each chose 5 things that we thought were the most important and write them down on our backpack that we made! Birthday GraphingWe created a graph about all of our birthdays and then discussed and compared the different months! Classroom Agreement WritingOur Week!We had a great week! It was so nice to be back after our February Break! We started our new Physical Science unit and really enjoyed all the exploring of matter! ReadingThis week we read some fables and a tall tale about two different frog characters! WritingIn writing, we are working on our Narrative story writing skills. We had already written a prequel to a story about an Alien named Bort, but now we are writing what happens next with Bort! We will use the Narrative Writing Diamond to make sure we have all the important parts of a story. Lexia CompetitionWe have been working so hard on this months Lexia competition! We may not have won the party, but we definitely won some new reading skills! ScienceWe will be exploring the three states of matter! We started out by exploring the three different states in the same containers to get an idea of what they are. We first observed the three states inside the balloons and then we observed each one outside the balloon container! Then we opened the containers to see what was inside! We had a solid, liquid, and a gas! In our next investigation, we observed the properties of solids! We had different kinds of solids to look at and describe. We learned a lot of new vocabulary for describing the properties of solids. All Aboard for a Fish Reward!Our class won the trophy for the Hallway Fish!!
Our WeekThis has been such a great week! We celebrated the 100th Day of School and Valentine’s Day! 100th Day of SchoolHip Hip Hooray! We made it 100 Days!! We had a blast celebrating this week! What can you turn 100 into?Our first activity was a creative challenge to turn the number 100 into something new! When I am 100 years old...We wrote about what we would look like when we are 100 years old and drew a picture of ourselves! Math Time FunWe did a couple different counting activities during math! 100 Things!We did 100 different things throughout the day! We hopped, dabbed, flossed, hyped, push-uped, sit-uped, squatted, jumping jacked, clapped, and free danced! 100th Day Snack!We made a snack with 100 pieces! Valentine’s DayHappy Valentine’s Day! We had a great time celebrating today! We decorated our own gift bags and really enjoyed passing out our Valentines to each other! |
