Last Week!I apologize for missing the update last week! Here is a glimpse into some of the fun things we did! Change is SimpleWe had a really cool lesson about deforestation and how to save trees from a group called “Change is Simple.” They started out the lesson by reviewing the parts of a tree as we acted like trees! Then we talked about how trees make oxygen that we breathe and humans exhale the carbon dioxide that trees need. We pretended to breathe and blow! The final activity of the lesson was how important it is to recycle paper. We split into two groups and actually used old paper that was turned into “paper pulp” to make our very own new, recycled sheet of paper! Our Homemade Paper!Math: Bar ModelingWe have all been working really hard to learn how to use bar models to solve addition and subtraction story problems! We even practiced in the computer lab on Math Playground! Celebrating Martin Luther King JrBecause we had Monday off of school last week, we wanted to learn the reason why. We learned all about the important life of Martin Luther King Jr and how he impacted our lives today. We watched a great video from Reading Rainbow about him. We did a really cool lesson using eggs to show how people may look different on the outside, but on the inside, we are all the same.

Our Week!We had a great week together. We learned all about different forms of communication, landforms, writing our opinions, and how to solve math problems with bar models! ReadingOur question of the week this week was “In what creative ways do we communicate?” We learned a lot of really neat amazing words! This week we read a great story called Dear Juno about a boy that shares letters with his grandmother. They communicate on different ways! One interesting way of communicating is through sign language. We learned the ASL alphabet and used it for word work on our spelling words. WritingWe had a really cool lesson about writing elaborate details this week! MathThis week has been a challenge math. We learned how to use Bar Models to solve problems that compare two numbers! We started using a really fun game online called “Thinking Blocks” from Math Playground. This game applies the skills of creating, labeling, and solving comparison bar models. We had a blast using it as a class and on our own! TO PLAY "THINKING BLOCKS" CLICK THE BUTTON BELOW!We learned how to decide between addition and subtraction and then practiced drawing our own from the math books. We are still learning how to do these problems, but we have learned a lot and have come a really long way! ScienceFor science this week we reviewed landforms. We read a great book and then assessed our knowledge with a cut and paste activity! Now that we have learned the different types of landforms, we are ready to dig into how they can be made! Computer LabWe loved the freedom to get to explore our learning sites in the computer lab this week! Our Week!We have had a really fun week this week! It’s been great getting back into a normal routine in the classroom. ReadingWe started Unit 3 of Reading Street. This unit is all about creativity and this week our focus was how to accept help from others when we create something. Our story is called Pearl and Wagner: Two Good Friends. The story is about how two friends help each other to put together a science project for a science fair. Silent Reading TimeWe have started adding a silent reading block to our literacy stations. Every day, we take 20 minutes to sit and enjoy reading silently. Be Proud, Read AloudThis coupon has become a hit. We had some risk takers reading out loud to their classmates this week! New Homework FoldersWe are revamping our homework routine. Starting next week, we will have a homework folder and a weekly homework plan! What better way to get excited about this change, than with decorating our new folders! MathThis week, we started learning about Bar Models and how this strategy can help us when solving addition and subtraction word problems. We practiced making the models together as a group with Unifix Cubes. We practiced writing our own story problems and then used Bar Models to show how to solve them and where the parts go in relationship to the whole amount. Science: LandformsWe started learning about Landforms this week! First, we shared what we already know about landforms and added them to a circle map. We looked at an image on the screen and wrote down everything we noticed about it before getting a Landform Dictionary to learn the different landforms in. We watched a great episode of Magic School Bus to learn all about how water can make landforms through erosion. The LoraxWe loves seeing the Fifth Graders put on The Lorax Play this week! After the play we did a fun perspective writing. We each picked a favorite character and told how that character felt in the story. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!Welcome back and happy 2019!! It was so great to come back to school and see all of these smiling faces! We had a fun week of getting resettled and also taking some mid year assessments! Assessment Warriors!Everyone did a great job powering through all of our mid-year assessments this week! Writing New Years ResolutionsWe are completing a fun writing piece this week and next week about our New Years Resolutions. We started out by making a circle map of different resolutions we could make! Then we chose a resolution and organized our writing to give three reasons why that is what we wanted to accomplish! Today we finished our flow maps and started writing our final copies! Be Proud, Read AloudWe have so many risk takers that our willing to pay their tickets to read a book out loud to the whole class! I love seeing these friends having so much courage to read in front of their peers! Teacher’s AssistantsWe have also been cashing in tickets to be the teacher’s assistant! Teacher’s Desk!!Titus paid 100 Tickets to sit at the teacher’s desk for a day!!
