Our Week!Even though it was a short one, we still had a really fun week! We learned more about numbers and how to compare them, different kinds of sentences, completing our opinion piece, and even got to become Geologists! ReadingWe learned all about declarative (statements) and interrogative (questions) type sentences. Next week we will learn about imperative and exclamative sentences. WritingWe completed our Opinion Pieces about Fall this week! We wrote 5 whole paragraphs for this piece by stating our opinions and then giving 3 reasons with details! To celebrate finishing the piece we read the book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert and then created our own leaf creations to illustrate our pieces. MathNow that we have learned how to build numbers in different ways, we are able to compare them! This week we learned the greater than and less than symbols, practiced comparing numbers, watched a couple helpful videos, and then played some fun games! We also learned a very neat game called Digit Place!
Digit PlaceScienceWe were so excited to start our Earth Science Unit this week! We will be exploring rocks and learning all about these earth materials! Today we explored and investigated three different kinds of rocks to see what happened when they were rubbed together. First we observed and described our rocks by looking at them closely with a hand lens. We collected data and sorted our rocks in different ways. Then we rubbed our different rocks together to see what happens. We rubbed them over black and white paper and then noticed that we started to break the rocks into tiny pieces. We made sand! Our Week!We had another fantastic week! We learned so much about numbers, how to write an opinion piece, and about subjects and predicates! We also all looked very nice for picture day on Tuesday! ReadingIn reading this week, we learned about identifying characters and settings of stories. We read the story Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night. We also reviews subjects in sentences and learned about the predicate of a sentence. A subject is what the sentence is about and the predicate is what the subject is doing! We watched a really fun video about Mr. Morton and all the things he does. WritingThis year, we will learn about and write three different types of writing pieces. This week we learned all about writing an opinion piece. Our theme is the season Fall. We started out by reading some facts about fall and deciding if these were things we like about the Fall season or dislike about the Fall season. We used this to determine our opinions about Fall! After making our opinions, we used our fact sheet to start our writing piece. We chose 3 things that we like or dislike about Fall and then listed the reasons we liked or disliked them. FundationsIn Fundations this week, we learned all about the secrets of knowing when to use C, K, and CK when we spell words. We also learned about closed syllables and how to identify if a word is a closed syllable or not! MathDid you know that we can write numbers in 4 different ways? We learned how to write in standard form, Base 10 form, expanded form, and word form this week!
We played a fun game of "Roll and Show" to practice writing 3 digit numbers in these four different ways. Then we made a fun Place Value Robot! We learned 2 different really fun games this week too! We learned how to play "Roll and Count" and "Race to 100!"
We also listened to and sang a really fun song about Place Value!! Our Week This Week!We had another great week in Second Grade! We are already learning so much! ReadingOur Reading Street story this week and has been all about SPACE! We are all definitely fascinated with outer space and really enjoyed learning about astronauts and space this week. We talked about Main Idea in Expository Texts and how to find supporting details. We also talked about subjects in sentences and learned that a complete sentence always has a subject. The subject in a sentence is a noun. We worked hard to identify subjects in different sentences. Astronauts Blasting Off!!WritingThis week in writing, we did a piece about our hoped and dreams for second grade. We each went through the entire writing process and brainstormed about things that we hope to learn or do in second grade. We organized our writing with a flow map, and then wrote a final draft on Friday. Our final drafts came out beautifully! They worked so hard to complete these pieces! FundationsWe started our phonics program this week! This year we will be using Fundations to review very important phonics skills. This week, we learned about digraphs and blends. We used out tiles to build words and mark them up! We also have some spelling words to work on from our Fundations. We use these words for Word Work every day when we begin our literacy stations. MathWe have been working so hard in math this week!! We learned all about the 100s Chart and learned how to use it for one more, one less, and ten more, ten less. We also enjoyed filling in some missing numbers and completed some mystery pictures! We were also introduced to Base 10 Blocks using 100s! We really loved having some extra time to build and play with them as toys before we turn them into tools that we use during math lessons! These tools will guide us in building numbers and undertanding place value! TICKET SPENDINGWe finally got to cash in our tickets today!! We got all kinds of great stuff! |
