Our Week!This week was so great! We learned a lot about space, numbers, and frogs! ReadingOur Reading Street story this week was all about space and astronauts. We also got to read about how black holes are formed. Our phonics skill this week was about Long Vowels made with the silent e. We went into Mrs. Cormier’s room for a fun lesson about King Ed! WritingIn writing we practiced finding the main idea in stories and learned about writing sentences with a subject and a predicate. We practiced writing sentences in our “Squiggle Book” by making something new out a squiggle and then writing a sentence about it! MathWe are still working on writing numbers in different ways. This week was all about expanded form! We watched a fun video to learn how! To practice writing numbers in different ways, we made a Place Value Robot! We also learned two new math games! A fact fluency game called Salute and a Base 10 Game called Block Houses! ScienceWe did a really cool investigation with Mystery Science this week about the sounds that different frogs make! We also finished our classifying animals investigation from last week! Bus EvacuationsWe practiced evacuating the busses this week! Curriculum NightThank you to all the parents that attended Curriculum Night this week! It was wonderful meeting everyone and thank you for sharing your sweet kids with me this year!

Our Week!We had another great week at West Parish! We are settling into a regular routine and really enjoying our class! ReadingIn reading this week, we repeated the story from last week and got used to the Reading Street routine. On Friday, we read the Sleuth Story with a small group! We also learned our routine of “must-do” before we choose a literacy station. Each week, we have a writing response to reading street and then a spelling sort for our phonics skill! Literacy StationsWe have almost learned all of the literacy stations! This week we added Word Work and Writing Response! Word WorkWriting ResponseWritingIn writing this week, we are starting to learn about genres. We read some samples of Personal Narratives and Narratives to compare these two different ways of writing. MathWe are learning how to make numbers in different ways. We started out by making two and three digit numbers with Base 10 Blocks this week! ScienceWe are starting to learn life science! Our Week!We had a fantastic first full week of school! We all really enjoyed getting to know each other and setting up a regular routine. Our Classroom AgreementsWe worked together to write the rules of our classroom. We are calling them our Classroom Agreements. After we wrote them, they were printed out and we all signed our names as a promise to follow our rules. We worked on some short vowel activities as our “must do” work and then practiced reading by ourselves and learned how to buddy read! WritingThis week we did our first writing piece! We wrote about the things that we hope rock learn and do in second grade. It’s called our Second Grade Hopes and Dreams. MathIn math we learned ordinal numbers and directional words. We practiced our skills by playing two really fun games! ScienceIn science we learned how to be scientists! We had a great time observing, sketching, and wondering with Doug on Mystery Science! All About MeWe all really enjoyed bringing in three things from home to tell our classmates about! Everyone shared and did a wonderful job! Backyard GrowersWe harvested the school garden this week! We loved picking the squash and carrots from the garden beds and then washing and weighing them. It was a little wet and chilly, but that did not bring us down! We had a great first week of school last week! This is going to be a wonderful year! Day 1: September 4, 2019Here we are on our first day of second grade! We had such a great time getting to know each other. We picked our seats in the morning and colored our name tags! We started out our day by reading a book called How Full Is Your Bucket? This story taught a very valuable lesson of how to treat each other and to not "dip" from others' buckets. Then we did a really fun "Find a Friend" activity to get to know our classmates! Every morning when we enter the classroom, we will be writing in our Daily Journals. We learned how to do this together. Class DojoWe will be using Class Dojo as part of our behavior system in the classroom! Today we picked our monsters out to have for the year! Our MonstersFirst Day JittersWe can all get a little nervous on the first day of school, and sometimes you need a little help! We read a great story called First Day Jitters and made a few connections with the characters in the book! After the story, we had some delicious Jitter Juice to wash away our first day jitters! After our tasty drink, we graphed whether we like the taste or not! Day 2: September 5, 2019Our second day of school was just as great as the first! Today we learned about picking just right books to put into our book boxes! Then we practiced how to read by ourselves in our new classroom. Name Graphing ActivityIn Math, we read a fun book called Chrysanthemum about a little girl with a really long name! This book led us into seeing how long our names are! We graphed them using post-it’s! Day 3: September 6, 2019We made it to Friday! Today we got to take tours of the school and learn about the new PBIS program at West Parish! There are expectations around the school building that teach us how to be respectful, responsible, and safe. We had a few fun lessons on the playground and in the cafeteria too! Successful Second GradersWe read another great book about things that kids need to have at school in order to be successful! It was called Brand New Pencils, Brand New Books. We made really cute backpacks with lists of what we think the top 5 most important things are! Our Backpacks! |
