HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!We have had tons of Halloween fun today! We started by watching the Kinder and First Grade Costume Parade yesterday! Bus Evacuation PracticeWe practiced evacuating a bus in case of an emergency today. Reading: CREEPY CARROTS!We read Creepy Carrots today to discuss cause and effect further! This book was a fun, spooky experience! WritingWe are practicing sentence writing this week. Today we worked on identifying subject and predicate with. A fun Halloween Roll a Swntence game! MathWe loves practicing all kinds of fun math skills with some more spooky activities! ScienceWe explores the properties of matter with pumpkins this week! Yesterday we looked at the pumpkin as a whole. We measured it, weighed it, sketched it, and tested whether it would sink or float! Today we looked at the properties of the inside of the pumpkin! We described the texture and then we counted how many seeds were inside our pumpkins!

Our Day Today! We have had a fun day today and at the end of the week last week! WritingLast week we wrote our opinions about Autumn. We read a great book to help us get more facts about Autumn called Leaf Man. We finished our writing and then made our own leaf creatures to publish our writing with. ReadingWe have started Unit 2 of Reading Street. This unit is all about helping others. Our focus question this week is “How can we help others in a dangerous situation?” We are reading a really neat story about two dogs that rescue their owner when he falls into some ice. Computer LabWe practiced more of our typing today with All The Right Type! MathThis week in math, we are learning different strategies to add numbers with regrouping. We learned how to add with Base 10 Blocks and how to make groups of tens with expanded form. Our Week So Far!We have been hard workers this week! ReadingThis week for Reading Street, we have been taking our Unit 1 Test! We spent some time reviewing and then we have been doing parts of our test everyday. We had to show what we learned by reading some passages and answering questions, recognizing phonics patterns and sight words, and responding to a writing prompt. We all worked really hard! WritingWe are still writing all about Autumn. This week we are talking about persuasive and opinion writing. We read a really fun book to learn some facts about fall. We used these facts to compare the differences between facts and opinions. We made a T-Chart to show them both. Then we filled out a sheet to show our likes and dislikes about autumn. After that we wrote our own opinion sentences about autumn. Computer LabWe went to the computer lab yesterday and we started using a new typing program called "All the Right Type." This program is showing us how to type using the keyboard the correct way. Today we all started out by practicing Home Row. MathThis week in math, we are working on using addition strategies to add two digit numbers. We are starting out by practicing this without regrouping. We used number lines to show how to count on using skip counting. Yesterday we learned how to practice this by using Base 10 Blocks. We continued practicing this skill today. We learned to make the numbers in Base 10 form to show how to add the ones and tens together to get our sum. We used our Base 10 blocks to make the numbers, and then our markers to draw the numbers on our desks. ScienceWe have been doing a really fun science investigation this week about the properties of solids. We used Mystery Science to discuss and investigate whether you can create a house out of paper. The lesson started out by thinking and talking about the different materials used to construct buildings and homes. We worked with a team to complete the whole science investigation. The second part of the activity was a challenge to build a tall tower out of note cards and paper clips. The third part of the activity was to construct a platform out of the same notecards that will hold a heavy book. Teacher’s AssistantsThese friends paid 50 Tickets to be my assistants this week!
What We Are Up To!!We had a wonderful week here in Second Grade! We have been learning a lot! Reading: SleuthsWe read a really neat article in our Reading Street Sleuth books today, aboutGregory Mendel, a scientists! We read the article wit ha partner and then worked together to write clues from the reading that told us why this man was a scientist. Writing: Narrative WritingWe have been learning all about narrative writing this week. Usually a narrative piece is a story and the Author's Purpose is to Entertain their readers. We read a really fun story called "The Nutty Squirrel" and talked about whether it was realistic fiction or if it is fantasy fiction. Today we explored the Narrative Writing Diamond from Empowering Writers and we practiced writing our own narrative pieces about Autumn. Math: Making 10 and a New Game!We have been talking about different addition strategies this week. Today we practiced making a 10 using a Ten Frame. We also learned a new fun and challenging game called DIGIT PLACE! This is a guessing game where one person thinks of a two digit or a three digit number and the others try to guess the number. Each time there is a guess, the person with the number writes down how many digits match their number and if any of the digits are in the correct place in place value. The guessers have to use these hints to figure out the mystery number. Our Day Today! We have been learning a lot this week! We have also been working really hard! Reading: The Strongest OneOur Reading Street story this week is called The Strongest One. This story is a Drama and written like a play! It is about an Ant that is trying to find out what is the strongest thing, so he goes around asking different characters if they are the strongest. Math: Making NumbersThis week in Math, we are practicing how to make numbers to 20 in different ways. We all know how to add two numbers together, but what are other ways to show how to make numbers? We learned that you can draw pictures, use Base 10 Blocks, use cubes, use a number line, and many more! We worked on coming up with eight different ways to make a number on our own and then we shared out with the group about our different strategies. Science: Reviewing Phases of MatterWe reviewed the different states of matter today by making a flip book in our science notebooks. We drew a picture of each phase: Solids, Liquids, and Gases, and then also drew a diagram of how the molecules look for each one. Then we watched the Phases of Matter episode of Bill Bye The Science Guy to review and learn a little bit more about the changes in phases of matter! We got to see many changes of solids to liquids, liquids to gases, and more in this video.
The Rest of Our Week!We have had a really fun week this week! We got to meet some very interesting birds! WINGMASTERS!We had an amazing lesson about birds of prey with Wingmasters and even got to meet some of the birds that they have rescued. We saw falcons, a hawk, and two owls! Reading: A Walk Through the DesertWe really enjoyed our Reading Street lesson this week. We read an expository text about the desert. It actually tied in really well with our Wingmasters visit! We read our story and then also read another short story about a horned lizard in our Sleuth books. Writing: All About AutumnWe have started using our Empowering Writers lessons this week! We are learning all about autumn and author's purpose. We looked at an expository writing piece and labelled all the parts of this type of writing. We learned about author's purpose and the different reasons why author's write. They write to Persuade, Inform, or to Entertain. These types of writings are called Opinion, Expository, and Narrative writings. This week we looked at expository writing and practiced writing our own. We practiced looking at The Expository Pillar to learn how to write an expository piece and compared it to our writing passage about autumn. We wrote down facts from the "All About Autumn" piece and then we drew a fun autumn illustration. MATH: Reviewing for our Test!We had our first math test today about Place Value. We had a fun time reviewing with our Place Value Task Cards before taking the assessment. Super Awesome Test Takers!!Vacation Sharing!Thank you Riley for sharing your fun Florida Vacation pictures with us today!
Our Day Today!ReadingThis week in Reading Street, we will be learning all about the desert and why you can discover by exploring it. We will read our expository text tomorrow and then start responding to our text in our writing station this week. Computer LabWe had a great time getting on Lexia in the computer lab today! Everyone was able to log in and start working on their reading skills. MathWe are practicing how to order numbers this week. We will be ordering from least to greatest and greatest to least. We will also be practicing how to count by fives, tens, and hundreds. Today we worked with groups to order numbers. We used cards to practice ordering first. Then we worked on teams to roll dice to make three digit numbers. We wrote our numbers, ordered them, and then showed one more/one less, ten more/ten less, and one hundred more/one hundred less. Science: States of MatterWe learned about the different states of matter today! First we watched a video on Brainpop Jr to learn about them and discover vocabulary to help us describe properties of each state. Then we observed objects and states of matter in containers and then what they looked like when you take that container away. The ContainersOur containers were balloons. Inside each balloon was a solid, liquid, or gas. We started out by setting up our science journals for the observation. We observed each container and wrote down different properties about each one. Removing the ContainersNext, we removed the containers from our solid, liquid and gas. Before each was removed, we questioned and predicted what would happen to the inside of the container after each balloon was removed. What would happen to the solid? To the liquid? To the gas? It was very neat to see if our predictions were correct. We observed and recorded what happened to each state of matter as the container was removed. After this, we discussed how matter is made up of tiny particles called molecules. Molecules behave differently in each state of matter. We looked at this anchor chart and then wrote down this information in our science journals. Just for fun, we decided to keep our solid and liquid until tomorrow to see what happens to it over night. Will our solid still be a solid? Star Moment!Today during music, Olive was asked to perform a song on the violin! Our Day Today!Today was a great day in our second grade class! Reading: SleuthsToday we practiced reading like detectives! We read a really cute story called “Bothie the Polar Dog” and then answered questions with a partner! Writing StoriesWe finished writing our realistic fiction stories today! We loved getting to share them with one another. Math: Comparing NumbersWe practiced comparing numbers today. It was a really fun challenge to compare numbers while showing three digit numbers in all of the different place value forms. We also enjoyed watching our “Hungry Alligator” video to remind ourselves how to use our greater than and less than symbols. What We Have Been Up To!We have had a fun week so far! This week we have been exploring nature! Reading: Exploring NatureThis week our Reading Street Story is Henry and Mudge and The Starry Night. This week we are learning about realistic fiction and how to identify characters and settings of stories. Literacy StationsWe have gotten really into using our literacy station rotations. Each day we rotate through the stations. We have spelling work, buddy reading stories, and written responses we do in each station before making a new choice! Writing: Realistic FictionWe are practicing using detail in our writing. Part of writing response today was drawing! The more we wrote to describe the setting of the story, the more we got to draw in our picture! For writing we are starting with a picture. We drew a picture of ourselves and another character doing something in nature. Then, we labeled our pictures! Tomorrow we will add more details to our picture and start to write our stories. MATH: Comparing NumbersWe will be practicing how to compare three digit numbers this rest of the week. We practiced writing the vocabulary of “greater than, less than, and equal to” as well as how to use the symbols correctly. We had a great time exploring different activities in our math rotations today! Science: Properties of SolidsWe are still talking about matter! This week we talked about how to describe and sort solids. We took our science lesson outside into nature to gather supplies for sorting! We took our items inside and sorted them in our groups. We sorted by how our group decided to sort first. Next, we learned about the different properties of solids and we re-sorted our items! Second Steps: Being AssertiveThis week’s Second Steps lesson was all about being assertive. It’s important to be able to ask for help when you need it, using a calm, firm voice. We looked at the picture of this boy named Connor, and talked about how he could ask for help because he doesn't understand him math assignment. Then to practice what we have learned about focus and self talk, we played a fun game of “Doodle Dancing!” We had doodles that each represented a fun dance move! We learned the rhymes that go with them and then danced! (I apologize for the video quality! It would not turn the correct way and starts out pretty blurry... But was too cute to not try to post anyways!) HAPPY BIRTHDAY JORDIN!! |
