Our Day Today! We has another fun day this week! Reading and Literacy StationsThis week is all about space in our Reading Street lesson! We have really enjoyed learning about astronauts. We started our official literacy station rotations as well! Math: Practicing Place ValueThis week we learned how to write numbers in different forms of place value. We wrote numbers in the 100s in Standard Form, Base 10 Form, Expanded Form, and Word Form! In our Math Rotations, we practiced these skills with partners and on our own! Science: Properties of MatterThis week we talked about sorting different properties of matter. We used unifix cubes to show that matter is made of smaller particles that work together to build different shapes. We also reviewed science safety rules and we signed our safety contracts! Social Studies: Using Self-TalkWe learned about focusing our attention and listening. One skill that helps us focus and listen is using self-talk to remind ourselves to concentrate. We listened to a song about focusing attention and had to do different hand movements when we heard the words "listen" and "attention." It was definitely harder than we thought it would be! Our Day Today! We had a wonderful Monday! New SpellingWe started a new way to do our spelling this week! We are learning to practice different spelling skills by sorting words into different cat theories that fit out patterns. Each list is made especially for what each student needs to work on in their own spelling skills. These same sorts and spelling lists are going home for homework today. Instructions for how to do the sorts will be listed below. Instructions for Word SortsEach word sort come with a two sided sheet to use. The front provides a description of the skills being worked with this list. At the bottom of the sheet, are the word cards. The top of the sheet has the answer key for how the words should be sorted. The back of the sheet has a sort mat with each category for the sorting pattern. Here are the instructions: 1) Cut out the word cards. 2) Use the sorting mat on the back to sort the words into their correct spots. 3) DO NOT GLUE THEM!!! 4) Check your answers using the front of the sheet. 5) Practice this sort every night! We learned how to do this in the classroom today, but new things can be hard! If you have any questions at all, please email Mrs. Bishop!! Library TimeWe had a wonderful first library experience today! Thank you to the moms that came in and volunteered to help us today! MATH: Practicing Base 10 BlocksWe reviewed making numbers to 1000 with Base 10 Blocks today. We practiced all together and then with partners. One person rolls the die three times to make a number. Then the other person made it and drew it with Base 10 Blocks! ScienceWe are getting started in our first science unit about matter! Today we talked about how to stay safe when doing science and watched a really fun video about science safety rules! Then we started to talk about matter and what we already know. We all knew that matter makes up everything, but needed to go further into what matter really is. We read a book called Matter with a buddy and then worked together to make a circle map about what we know. Our Day Today! We were excited to get back into a normal routine today! Literacy Stations: Word WorkToday we learned how to work our spelling words in the Word Work Station! There are so many fun choices in this station. We can write our words in fun ways, use magnet letters to make words, build word puzzles, write words in dry erase marker, play the game Pop, and make our words out of Playdough! WritingWe have been working on our writing piece about our “Bag About Me” bags. We made a tree map and a flow map. Today we are writing our rough draft on writing paper and will edit our writing! Math: Place ValueThis week we have been talking about numbers to 1,000. We are starting out by making numbers with Base 10 Blocks and figuring out how many ones, tens, and hundreds are in each number. Today we played a group game to see which group could get a number made first after hearing it from the fun game on abcya.com! Click the button to play the game at home! Looking forward to more fun tomorrow!Happy International Dot Day!We dressed in dots today to show our enthusiasm for celebrating this fun day! The DotThis beautiful story teaches such a great lesson. Make a mark, all you have to do is start and make it matter. We really enjoyed listening to the story together. Then we each got a dot and turned it into something else on paper. We also listened to a really fun song that goes with the story and sang along and danced to it! We also colored a big dot and used it to make a new dot for each of us by cutting it into four equal parts! Our Day Today! We have had a great couple days together! ReadingAmazing WordsWe are reviewing our Amazing Words and writing the meaning of them in a vocabulary four square! The two words we worked on are “rural” and “urban.” The Twin ClubWe are reading a fun story in our Readkng Street books called The Twin Club! We did a shared reading of t today by sitting together on our rug. Short Vowel PracticeWe practiced our short vowel sounds with a fun video to get our blood pumping and brains ready! Then we did a word search with our short vowel practice words! Practicing Read By MyselfWe are still working on our stamina for reading by ourselves. We learned how to pick a “just right book” with a fun I-PICK acronym! Then we practiced reading again. WritingWe are doing a writing piece this week about what we hope to learn in second grade. We started out by making a circle map to brainstorm ideas. Then we took our circle map ideas and chose 3 things we hope to learn in second grade. We put these three things into a Tree Map with our reasons why. Math: Positional Wordsin math we are working on Ordinal numbers and position words. We practiced knowing left from right and then played a fun game of “Find It First!” Second Step Lesson: Being ReapectfulWe learned about being respectful today by listening to each other’s ideas respectfully. We also looked at a photograph to observed what the kids are doing. Bag About MeWe started sharing our about our bags today! Here are a few pictures of us that have shared so far! Reading Street LessonWe started our first reading lessons with Reading Street today! This week we are learning about exploring communities. We will be practicing noir Short Vowel sounds too! Read By MyselfOur first literacy station we are learning to use is “Read By Myself.” In this station we will work on stamina and reading fluency to become better readers. We made a T-Chart to show what this station should look like and not look like. Then we practiced how to do this station today and tried to read for as long as we could! We made it 5 minutes and 14 seconds today! We will try to beat our time tomorrow. LibraryWe will have our library time every Monday. We went to visit the library today to see what it is like! In the GardenIt is Fall Harvest time! We joined Backyard Growers outside in the garden and harvested some squash today! Tomorrow we will get to sample the squash in the cafeteria. We had a great time reviewing the parts of plants, and talking about how the squash grows. Math: Ordinal NumbersToday we reviewed ordinal numbers. We will be reviewing some of our first grade math skills this week. First we worked to find our match with the numbers written in number form and in word form. We explored math stations this afternoon and practiced using these skills. Our stations included practice sheets to show what we know, an Ordinal Numbers Bump game, pattern block and unifix cube ordering, and making a memory game at the teacher table! Practice SheetsOrdinal Numbers BumpBlock ExplorationTeacher TableWelcome to Second Grade! We had a wonderful first week of school here in Mrs. Bishop's Second Grade Class at West Parish! This blog is a place to get a glimpse into our classroom and see all of the fun things we are doing throughout the day. September 5, 2018: The First Day of SchoolWhat a fun group of kids! We are going to have a great school year together! Our first day was full of activities to get to know each other and learn about our school and classroom. Learning Rules and ProceduresTo learn more about the importance of following rules and procedures, we read a great book called Officer Buckle and Gloria. In this story, we were able to see what happens when rules aren't followed and why we should listen and take them seriously! When Officer Buckle doesn't come to a school to speak with his police dog partner Gloria, a banana pudding spill causes a series of rule breaking that leads to a huge mess! After finishing our story and sharing some of our own personal experiences about rules with each other, we took a tour of the school to see places that we will need to go and how to have proper hallway behavior. Class DojoOne of our classroom management plans that we will use in our classroom is Class Dojo. You can find a bigger explanation of how we will use this tool here: OUR CLASSROOM We had a great time looking on the computer and choosing our own Dojo monsters to represent us throughout our school year! Here we are moving our clips up for the first time on the clip chart! Our First Journal EntryEvery morning when we arrive, we will be doing a morning journal entry. Today we wrote our first entry! It said: "Today is the first day of school. My name is ____________. This is what I look like." We drew a picture of ourselves at the top of the page. Washing Away Our JittersEveryone can be a little nervous on the first day of school and have what we call "jitters." We read a great book called, First Day Jitters to show how students aren't the only ones that get nervous on the first day of school! There is a surprise ending to this book that left everyone laughing! Make sure to ask the kids about what happens at the end of the story!! There is also a fun poem that goes along with this lesson called "Jitter Juice." We read the poem together as a class and recited it a couple times while pointing out the rhyming words! We followed the poem by actually washing away our First Day Jitters with some jitter juice of our own! Then of course we had to make a picture graph to see who liked their jitter juice and who did not! September 6, 2018: The Second Day of SchoolWe came into the classroom on our second day of school, ready to practice our morning routine. We unpacked, grabbed our journals, and chose our seat for the day! West Parish Core Values: CAREIn our second grade classroom, we will be writing our own class rules. We started the process today by digging into the West Parish Core Values and talking about the acronym for C.A.R.E. Each letter of the word CARE represents a different word. We talked about each word as a group and then read a book called The Crayon Box That Talked. In this story, we learned about how important it is to work together and cooperate with one another in our classroom. After the story, we worked in groups to write or draw what each word of CARE looks like in action, then we presented our circle maps to the whole class! Our Reading CenterWe explored our reading center today and had a blast buddy reading! Making FriendsFriendship and community are such important parts of our classroom. We talked about how we should treat one another and how much it matters to treat each other with respect and kindness. We read the book How Full Is Your Bucket and talked about what it really means to take out and put in to someone else's bucket.
We did a fun "Find a Friend" activity after our lesson and learned a lot about each other! Graphing Our NamesWe read the book Chrysanthemum and turned it into a really fun graphing activity. We used Post-Its to create a HUGE bar graph on our whiteboard to show the different lengths of all of our names! This graph showed us how to compare and come up with our own information questions about a graph.
September 7, 2018: The Third Day of SchoolWe had a blast on our third day of school. We really enjoyed some crafting activities and writing our class rules today! Successful Second GradersWhat do second graders need to be successful? We worked together to come up with a list of things we need in order to have a great second grade year! We did a really fun craft activity by making our own list and then putting it on our own backpacks that we made with construction paper! Our Classroom AgreementsThis last few days have been leading up to us writing our own classroom rules. We worked together to answer 5 essential questions that led us into writing up our rules and then promising to follow them. Here we are writing and signing our classroom agreement!
