Our Week!We had some fun activities this week! ReadingIn Reading Street this week, we learned about different and creative ways to communicate. We read a great story called Dear Juno and learned how a little boy and his grandmother correspond with letters and special pictures. FundationsWe have started a new phonics system in the classroom ghat is all about building new words with skills that are taught each week! So far it is going really well! WritingWe are still working hard on our Story Challenge! Everyone has started to write their stories and they are getting really good! MathThis group is GREAT at bar models! We have all learned to draw our own, fill in the parts and whole, and then solve the problem! ScienceWe have learned all about different rock particle sizes, down to sand, but is there a particle smaller than sand? That is what we investigated this week by washing sand in vials! First we explored the sand with our eyes on paper plates to see if we could separate some particles with “plate shaking.” After that we looked closer at the sand particles with hand lenses. We put our sand back into the vials and then added water to see what happens to the sand. We watched as the sand absorbed the water and then shook our containers up to mix the sand and water together. We let the vials sit over night so that we could observe what happened the next day. After sitting over night, we were surprised to have discovered a new layer on top of our sand. We found silt! We observed the silt and journaled about it in our science notebooks.
